More than a quarter of all spacecrafts launched are communications satellites and a fifth are photo-reconnaissance (“spy”) satellites.

Of the 6,854 spacracfts launched from 1957 to 2009:
1,899 are communications satellites (1,050 civilian and 778 military) 27.5 % 
of the total
1,215 are surveillance (spy) satellites (using camera or radar) 19 %
591 are other kind of military observation satellites 9 %
539 are piloted spaceships (manned and unmanned) 8 %
416 are meteo and Earth-remote sensing satellites 6 %
393 are military navigation satellites 6 %
355 are Earth/space science satellites 5 %
333 are space probes and astronomy/solar observatories. 5 %
