Mission:
In April 1971,  it was announced that OGO 5 observations showed gas surrounding comets to be composed almost totally of hydrogen and that interstellar wind previously believed to be coming from constellation Hercules actually seemed to be coming from Sagittarius and Scorpius. Scientists now surmised that there was no stellar wind, but only apparent wind caused by passage of solar system through thin and nearly stationary interstellar medium of hydrogen.
Notes: On 15 July 1964, NASA announced that it had selected 22 scientific experiments for the fifth Orbiting Geophysical Observatory (OGO-E), scheduled to be launched in 1966. 54 scientists from four countries (U.S., U.K., France, and the Netherlands) representing universities, government and private industry would take part in designing and constructing the experiments. The satellite was scheduled to be launched into an eccentric orbit, with an apogee of 148,00 km and a perigee of 275 km. The OGO-E experiment would study energetic particle radiation, Earth and interplanetary magnetic fields, effect of solar gases on the earth’s magnetic fields and radio communication, and the effect of solar radiation on the Earth.

Mission:
Notes: On 25 January 1965, NASA announced two Radio Astronomy Explorer satellites (RAE-A and RAE-B) would be designed to investigate low-frequency (long wavelength) emissions from our galaxy, its planets, and the stars. These emissions are mostly intercepted by the ionosphere so that little can be learned about them from ground-based receivers. This would be the first attempt to map the galaxy for low-frequency emissions. The 90-kg spacecraft would be launched by Thrust-Augmented Delta into circular orbits at altitudes of about 6,000 km and would measure the intensity of the signals, their frequency, times of emission and, within limitations, define the regions of space in which they originated. Proposed designs called for the development of two 225-m V-shaped antennas that would be mounted opposite each other, forming a giant X. They would be anchored to the basic spacecraft, a cylinder of about 1 metre, capped by two truncated cones. NASA Goddard Space Flight Center would design, integrate, and test the two spacecraft. First launch was not expected before 1967.

Orbit: Geostationary
Mission:
Notes: CANYON was the first geosynchronous signals intelligence satellite, launched from 1968 to 1977 as part of NRO's Program A and developed by the US Air Force.  The program was highly classified (and remains so even over 20 years after program completion) and for many years analysts thought they were a first-generation DSP early warning satellite. Launches under the Program 827 designation were carried out by the uprated Atlas SLV-3A/Agena D rocket from Cape Canaveral. CANYON's successors have flown under the designations CHALET, VORTEX and MERCURY; official statements following the last MERCURY launch failure imply that despite these code name changes, and several spacecraft block changes, these satellites are all considered part of a single geostationary communications intelligence program. It is conjectured that the CANYON spacecraft features a cylindrical bus of order 1.5 meter in diameter attached to one or more large antennas; it is thought to have transmitted its data to a ground station at Bad Aibling in Germany.
