Spacecraft:  OPS 2849
Numbers: 1982 payload #6 ; 1982-006A ; 3165th spacecraft.
Type: Reconnaissance
Sponsor: U.S. National Reconnaissance Office
Launch: 21 January 1982 at 19h36 UTC, from Vandenberg Air Force Base's SLC-4W, by a Titan 3B (Titan 24B-26 (3B-62) / Agena D).
Orbit:
Deorbited: 23 May 1982
Mission: The perigee of the orbit of this KH-8 GAMBIT was nearly three times as high as its predecessors (553 by 646 kilometer). This was the launch of a specialized KH-8 satellite that had been sitting in storage for a decade. In the 1970s, to guard against a potential interruption of search area coverage, the NRO initiated a program called “HIGHER BOY” to fly a KH-8 GAMBIT at high altitude. At this high altitude, the satellite would observe more area at lower resolution. A spacecraft modified to conduct this mission was produced and placed in storage. A decade later the NRO launched it into orbit. The overall success of the HIGHER BOY mission is unknown, but what is known is that one of the spacecraft’s two reentry vehicles failed to come down properly. From its higher orbit it lacked the power to reenter and stayed in orbit for a long period of time.
