Notes: On 31 May 1965, Cheng Chu-yuan, writing in Military Review, reports:  “Along with the development of a nuclear weapon, Communist China has also conducted a program to develop rockets. … Since Communist China has several capable men with long years of experience in the rocket field, and since China began her rocket project almost in the same period with the nuclear weapons program, the development of a rocket booster might soon be anticipated. It is quite possible that China may launch her first rocket within the next two or three years.”

Launch: 17 August 1970 at 5h38 UTC, from Baykonur Cosmodrome's LC-31, by an A-2-e/"Molniya" (8K78M).
Orbit: Landed on Venus
Decayed: 15 December 1970 (ceased transmission on Venus' surface).
Mission: On 15 December 1970, Venus 7 landed intact on planet Venus and relayed scientific information from the surface of another planet for the first time. Spacecraft transmitted signals for 23 minutes, recording surface temperature at 475° C and pressure, at 90 atmospheres. Tass said continuous measurements of the atmospheric parameters were made all the way to surface and it was established “that Venus possesses an unusually hot atmosphere, the density of which, at the surface, is about 60 times greater than the density of the atmosphere on the Earth’s surface.”

Mission: Lunokhod I, a self-propelled lunar rover vehicle (or selenomobile), was placed on the Sea of Rains by Luna 17 on 16 November 1970 (EST) to conduct scientific investigations. The roving vehicle left Luna 17 descent stage at 1:28 EST on 17 November by special gang-way and traveled 20 m from spacecraft to begin experiments.  It looked like large silver tub about the size of small automobile with eight spoke wheels apparently powered by solar energy and batteries. Tass said Lunokhod I was equipped with scientific apparatus, instruments and control systems, and radio and TV devices. Tass said vehicle’s movement could be controlled automatically or by ground controllers following televised information on position and character of surrounding lunar surface. Between 17 and 22 November, 10 radio and TV sessions were held and large amount of data was transmitted. Chemical composition of surface layer of lunar soil was analyzed with x-ray spectrometer and mechanical properties of lunar soil and transportability of vehicle were investigated. In addition, Panoramic pictures of lunar landscape were taken, in which tracks made by Lunokhod I, details of lunar surface, and parts of vehicle were clearly visible. TASS news agency indicate that, at some points, the incline reached 14 deg. Along the path, Lunokhod encountered deep craters the detours to which were ensured by the operators (on Earth). On 22 Novemberm after five days on lunar surface, Lunokhod I was commanded to terminate operations in preparation for lunar night. Tass said the vehicle had traveled 197 meters. Vehicle was moved to an “assigned position” where it would remain stationary during lunar night and solar panels were closed.
On 8-9 december 1970, Lunokhod I, resting on lunar surface, resumed exploration of Sea of Rains after two weeks of inactivity during lunar night. On Dec. 9, one-hour communications session was held, solar panels were opened and positioned toward sun, and photos of rising sun and lunar surface were taken. ON 10-11 December, Lunokhod I completed nine-hour exploration mission, traveling 244 meters over lunar surface. Vehicle traveled in and out of crater 16 meters in diameter and 2 meters deep, transmitted TV pictures of landscape and data on soil properties and operation of Lunokhod systems.
Lunokhod 1, energized by solar cells after surviving second lunar night on the Moon, completed third exploration operation, moving about 128 meters during 435-hr period. Vehicle had been inoperative since beginning of lunar night Dec. 23, 1970, and had been opened to receive solar energy on 8 January 1971. ON 17 January, Lunokhod 1 returned to Luna 17 landing stage, completing one of planned experiments for Luna 17. The lunar rover had traveled 3,173 meters since it landed on moon.
On 17 May 1971, Lunokhod 1 completed six months of lunar exploration and was still functioning satisiactorily. Pravda reported vehicle was being activated on a month-to-month basis. According to Pravda, Lunokhod 1’s systems “began to give out” at beginning of fifth lunar day in early April, but recuperated. “Now at the height of the sixth lunar day the vehicle, heeding command from Earth, continues to live, work and move about as if it [were] only yesteday, and not Nov. 17 [1970], that it descended from the landing stage that had brought it to the Sea of Rains. The viability of the Lunokhod’s design had turned out to be far greater than its creators expected.”
On 22 May 1971, Lunokhod 1  began “a new mode of operation requiring only minimum movements,” Tass announced. Vehicle would remain in semi-hibernation, photographing surrounding area and transmitting data to earth until its instruments wore out.

Mission:
Explorer 42 had detected new x-ray pulsar Cygnus X-1 generating x-ray pulses at 15 per sec in Constellation Cygnus, 13 new x-ray objects in Milky Way and remote galaxies, and confirmed that quasar 3C273 in Seyfert Galaxy was x-ray emitter. Quasar was billion light years away -- most distant object from earth known to emit x-rays.
On 13 May 1971, Explorer 42 was judged successful by NASA. Satellite had completed full systematic scanning of galactic plane and substantially complete scan (95%) of celestial sphere. Experiment instrumentation was functioning in outstanding manner, exceeding many design objectives. Spacecraft control section performance - except for tape recorder and slight decrease in telemetry modulation, which had not affected data quality - was excellent. Acquired scientific data had touched on every aspect of observational x-ray astronomy and significant unexpected phenomena had been observed. Discovery of three new x-ray pulsars - Cygnus X-1, Centaurus X-3, and Lupus X-1 - revealed class of pulsating x-ray source that differed in many respects from previously known x-ray pulsar in Crab Nebula.
