Built by students at several Utah universities. it is a joint project between Weber State University and Utah State University. NUSAT is the forerunner in a new type of world wide industry to build small, simple and low-cost satellites for special applications. The small 54.5-kg satellite was used to demonstrate a method to evaluate the beams on the Federal Aviation Agency secondary radar systems. It was deployed from a modified GAS canister on Challenger, during mission STS-51B, and it re-entered in 1986 after a 20 month life in orbit.
