McCandless and Stewart : the first human satellites
Bruce McCandless and Robert Stewart performed a dress rehearsal for the Solar Maximum Mission (Solar Max) satellite retrieval, scheduled for the next flight (STS 41-C). On 7 February 1984, during an EVA, McCandless became the firt human to fly in space onboard the MMU jetpack ("Manned Maneuvering Unit"). He became independant of the Orbiter, thus becoming a satellite of its own.  He first moves 45 meter out from Challenger, returned to the payload bay, flew out to 96 meters and returned, then moved out again to about 99 meters.  Stewart then flew the MMU 93 meter from Challenger.

Nelson  used a MMU to capture a satellite
On 8 April 1984, George Nelson used a MMU ("Manned Maneuvering Unit") to try to retrieve the Solar Maximum Mission satellite, but without success. He thus leaves the payload bay of Challenger to become a "human satellite". (The Solar Max was later capture by the RMS/Canadarm and repaired on 11 April by two walking astronauts. Van Hoften also took the MMU on a short test flight in the payload bay.)

Allen and Gardner used a MMU to retrieve two errant satellites
On 12 November 1984, Joseph Allen donned a MMU. He then flew to the 555-kg Palapa B-2 and, with the help of Dale Gardner, proceed to stow the satellite into Discovery's payload bay. On 14 November, Gardner (using a MMU) proceed to retrieve in the same way the 499-kg Westar VI satellite. This EVA marks the final flight of the MMU; the two flight units were used in six EVAs and had flown a total of 10 hours and 22 minutes in space.
