EUVE / Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer
Spacecraft:
Numbers: 1992 payload #43 ; 1992-031A ; 4768th spacecraft.
Type: Astronomy
Sponsor: NASA
Launch: 7 June 1992 at 16h33 UTC, from Cape Canaveral's LC-17A, by a Delta 6925 (Delta 6920-10 / Delta 210).
Orbit: 514 km x 528 km x 28.4°
Decayed: 31 January 2002
Mission: The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer carried three sky survey scanner EUV telescopes and a deep survey telescope with a 1.4-meter focal length and a 2-degree field of view. The sky survey was completed in January 1993 and since then EUVE has been used by guest astronomers for observations of specific targets. Most EUV observations are of nearby stars and the interstellar medium, since hydrogen absorption makes the galaxy almost opaque at EUV (0.01-0.09 micron) wavelengths, but a few extragalactic objects do shine through.
On 2 February 2001, EUVE was switched off, NASA deciding to terminate funding for the mission, even though the spacecraft was still operating well. The final observations were made on 26 January. After end-of-life tests of the never-used backup high voltage supplies and checking the remaining battery capacity, EUVE was stabilized pointing away from the Sun and sent into safehold at 23h59 UTC on 31 January. The transmitters were commanded off on 2 February.

Mission: A thin-film aluminum space mirror, called Znamya, was to have been deployed as part of a program to illuminate regions of the Earth at night with reflected sunlight. As the rotating dispenser unfurled what was supposed to become an aluminum disk 25 meters in diameter, another console in the control center suddenly issued a command to deploy a boom-mounted antenna. The boom extended directly into the space where the disk was rotating. As a result, the aluminum wrapped itself around the boom and tore itself into shreds. The operator claimed that nobody had told him there would be any physical contact.
