Orbit: In orbit across Saturn's system.

Mission: Carrying ESA’s Huygens probe, Cassini arrived at Saturn on 30 June 2004, after a seven year tranverse from Earth, and for a four-year primary mission. Since 2008, NASA has granted the mission three extensions. "By having a decade there with Cassini, we have been privileged to witness never-before-seen events that are changing our understanding of how planetary systems form and what conditions might lead to habitats for life," said Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist at NASA's JPL. Eengineers and scientists had high hopes that the mission might carry on longer, the spacecraft has been remarkably trouble-free and, from an engineering standpoint, the main limiting factor for Cassini's lifetime now is how much propellant is left in its tanks.
Here are Cassini 10-Year, top 10-discovery at Saturn:
1. 1. Huygens' 2005 landing on Titan revealed this moon to be remarkably like Earth before life evolved, with methane rain, erosion and drainage channels and dry lake beds. A soup of complex hydrocarbons, including benzene, was found in Titan's atmosphere.
2. 2. Discovery of active, icy plumes on Enceladus which was such a surprise that Cassini manager completely reshaped the mission to get a better look. The discovery became even more important when Cassini found evidence of water-based ice in the plume. so the search for life suddenly extended to this small, bright moon. And the recent discovery of signs of an subsurface ocean makes Enceladus one of the most exciting science destinations in our Solar system.
3. 3. Saturn’s rings revealed as active and dynamic, a laboratory for how planets form. Cassini discovered propeller-like formations, witnessed the possible birth of a new moon and observed what may be one of the most active, chaotic rings in our solar system (Saturn’s F ring).
4. 4. Cassini’s shows that Titan has many geologic processes similar to that of the Earth, generating methane rains, which build river channels and form lakes and seas containing liquid methane and ethane.
5. 5. Late in 2010, Saturn’s relatively tranquil atmosphere erupted with a storm of gigantic proportions. Typically a 30-year storm, this one arrived ten years early. Within months, the storm grew to encircle the planet with a swirling band. The largest temperature increases ever recorded for any planet were measured. Molecules never before seen in Saturn’s upper atmosphere were detected. The storm diminished shortly after its head collided with its tail, a little less than a year after it began.
6. 6. Radio-wave patterns shown not to be tied to Saturn’s interior rotation as previously thought. Cassini’s instruments show that the variation in radio waves is different in the northern and southern hemispheres. The variations also appear to change with the Saturnian seasons and the hemispheres have actually swapped rates. Saturn’s length of day is still not known.
7. 7. Once about every 15 years, the Sun shines on the edge of the ring plane and northern and southern sides of the rings receive little sunlight. Cassini measured the thick, long shadows from this rare event to determine the heights of structures within the rings.
8. 8. Titan’s atmosphere is a zoo teaming with a variety of molecules, the most chemically complex in the Solar system. Beginning with sunlight and methane, ever more complex molecules form until they become large enough to form the smog that covers the giant moon. Nearer the surface, methane, ethane, and other organics condense and fall to the surface where likely other prebiotic chemistry can take place.
9. 9. The origin of Iapetus's two-faced surface has been a mystery for more than 300 years. The Cassini spacecraft solved the puzzle: dark, reddish dust in Iapetus's orbital path is swept up and lands on the leading face of the moon. The dark areas absorb energy and become warmer, while uncontaminated areas remain cooler.
10.. 10. Saturn’s polar regions have surprised scientists with a the presence of a long-lived hexagonal-shaped jet stream in the north and two hurricane-like storms at both poles. The driving forces of each remain a mystery. In the remaining years of Cassini’s mission, scientists hope to learn more of their properties and conditions surrounding their existence.

At left, a composite image shows the boundary between the lighter-colored uplifted terrain, marked with what appear to be drainage channels, and darker lower areas. The image was taken from an altitude of 8 kilometers with resolution of about 20 meters per pixel.  At right, the only colored view taken from the surface of Titan. The two rock-like objects just below the middle of the image are about 15 centimeters (left) and 4 centimeters (center) across respectively, at a distance of about 85 centimeters from Huygens.

This is a full 360° view around Huygens as viewed from an altitude of about 8 kilometers with a resolution of about 20 meters. As the probe descended, it drifted over a plateau (center of image) and was heading towards its landing site in a dark area (right).  The white streaks seen near this boundary could be ground 'fog,' as they were not immediately visible from higher altitudes.  Source: NASA
Mission: On 14 January 2005, after a 4 billion-kilometer journey through the Solar System that lasted almost seven years, the Huygens probe plunged into the hazy atmosphere of Titan. It reached the entry reference point of 1,270 km above the surface at 9h05:56 UTC. During the following three minutes, the spacecraft had to decelerate from 18,000 to 1,400 km/hr. By 9h10:24, the entry was complete and at about 160 km altitude, the pilot parachute deployed, followed two seconds later by the aft cover and the main 8.3-meter diameter parachute. A sequence of parachutes then slowed it down to less than 300 km/hr. The parachute descent ends at 9h25:21 when the main parachute was jettisoned and a smaller 3.0-meter diameter stabilizer parachute took over. At a height of about 160 km, scientific instruments were exposed to Titan’s atmosphere as the DISR (Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer) camera snapped remarkable images of an apparent coastline during the ensuing slower 2-hour descent to the surface. The spacecaft landed safely on a frozen ground at 11h38:11 UTC, at 11° South latitude and 192° West longitude. Huygens continued to transmit signals even after the Cassini orbiter dropped below the horizon, and until at least 14h48, when the spacecraft set as seen by the Parkes radio telescope (Australia). Received signal indicate that Huygens was still transmitting after three hours on the surface. Cassini received excellent data from the surface of Titan for 1 hour and 12 minutes.
More than 474 megabits of data were received in 3 hours 44 minutes from Huygens, including some 350 pictures collected during the descent and on the ground, which revealed a landscape apparently modelled by erosion with drainage channels, shoreline-like features and even pebble-shaped objects on the surface. As the probe touched down at about 4.5 metres per second (16 km/h), a whole series of instruments provided a large amount of data on the texture of the surface, which resembles wet sand or clay with a thin solid crust, and its composition as mainly a mix of dirty water ice and hydrocarbon ice, resulting in a darker soil than expected. The temperature measured at ground level was about -180 °C. The atmosphere was probed and sampled for analysis at altitudes from 160 km to the ground, revealing a uniform mix of methane with nitrogen in the stratosphere. Methane concentration increased steadily in the troposphere down to the surface. Clouds of methane at about 20 km altitude and methane or ethane fog near the surface were detected.

PoSAT-1 was built at the University of Surrey in a collaborative program between a consortium of Portuguese academia and industry.  The Portugese consortium sent 4 engineers to Surrey to participate in on-the-job training.  Like KITSAT-1, PoSAT-1 carries a wide range of technology experiments, including earth imaging cameras, DSP and space-radiation experiments. In addition, PoSAT-1 carries the first microsatellite GPS experiment and an ultra-low-cost CCD star sensor. It is operated jointly by the University of Surrey command station at Guildford and the Portugese command station at Sintra. PoSAT was operated on amateur frequencies for several weeks in early 1994.
